Mahjong

This program is currently unavailable. Click here to view all of our current programs.

Mahjong, also spelled majiang, mah jongg, and numerous other variants, is a game that originated in China. It is commonly played by four players (with some three-player variations found in Korea and Japan). The game and its regional variants are widely played throughout Eastern and South Eastern Asia and have a small following in Western countries. Similar to the Western card game rummy, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance.  Standish Recreation is offering 5 weeks of instruction, and once those players have learned,  they may be able to continue getting together to play for enjoyment.

** Each student MUST have the 2014 Official Standard Hands and Rules Card.  It is easily available from the National Mah Jongg League, Inc. 250 West 57th Street, New York, NY 10107 or visit their website at https://www.nationalmahjonggleague.org.    (Orders for the card can be placed on-line – it is either $8.00 or $9.00 depending upon the size.)
